My first post!

Two scans from one of my fashion shoots, the most enjoyable one so far. I have just added sharpening and adjusted colour balance.

Im thinking of using the poolside image for folio (fashion) but let me know what you think of them. Ill try and put some more up as I go.

thanks!

My first ever fashion shots with local model. Very very nervous. Had to consult with a few guys prior shooting (thanks dean, tiff, matt). brought along my gf for wardrobe management (she carried a briefcase full of dresses we “borrowed” from boutiques in city). my make up artist bailed on me the last minute. he apparently was too drunk the night before thus unfit to come and help :-(   dean was there to assist with the lightings and coreography. he’s just too damn good.

my shooting skill is very rusty and stiff. seriously. i need to learn how to communicate with models on the set, how to make them comfortable in front of camera. so anyone who’s doing fashion shoots in city and could use some assistance on the set, please do not hesitate to ask me! i’d be very happy to assist with anything and will definitely learn a thing or two from u :-)

btw, how much photoshopping is allowed in location brief? i find Gordon a little more flexible on this compared to our previous teacher, Sally.

X.O.X.O (hahaha)

This is my first shot for folio assessment. Just finished printing the test prints so may still have some work to do tomorrow but just though I’d throw it up here. I prefer this to a lot of the other portraits I shot over the break. Any thoughts?

I’ve been meaning to scan this for a while and only just got around to it. It’s a portrait from the absolute last minute of shooting before folio presentation. Unfortunately it’s a terrible scan and hasn’t come up too well, maybe just imagine it with a few layers of awesome added. I don’t really like the way it’s come up but still wanted to share, I do really like the transparency though. Thanks to Alessandro for the modelling.

From memory it was shot on Velvia 400 at f2.8.

Ben

I went out today to attempt to do some zone photography portraits. Apart from the fact that my camera is a stop out so i was shooting at 64 ISO (which made it frustrating because i had to use wide apertures and slow shutter speeds), for this particular shot the ratio between the highlight and shadow was 4 stops… so i couldn’t take photos for folio (i took others, hopefully i exposed and process them correctly!). Anyways! I took some digital shots because i could. And converted them to B&W because they look much better that way. More here (pfft to shadow detail, it was captured in the exposure but through my B&W conversion and love for contrast i decided it had to go).

I understand the methodology behind zone photography and see how it can be quite effectively utilised, but when you have patchy, cloudy days like today it makes it very frustrating. >_< I may have to go back to this location on a sunny day…

i mish-mash of influences and the state of mind i’ve been in recently. multiple exposure on digital. fp4+ grain sample from one of my older shots. not meant to be perfect, just something i needed to get out. a theme i’ve been considering for my location conceptual.

Personally, i can’t wait until we learn the advanced flash workshop. Ever since i learnt about the correct use, and how to properly use the flash in portraiture, i’m addicted to it! It’ll be great to be able to have the confidence in lighting a model/portrait in the weeks to come.

Do you enjoy flash?

We haven’t really needed to have this debate at this point in the course due to the requirement for everything to be on film, but what are your personal opinions? What will be your medium of choice for second and third year? The Digital Imaging subject definitely opens up the possibilities with out work if working on that medium.

Although i’ve used film before studying at RMIT i predominantly used a digital camera so i found it a little bit daunting going back to film. In fact, i still carry a digital body with me to shoots to do test shots and make sure i get something useful out of it. A good example would be an attempt of mine at something for my first semester location folio. Although i exposed the image correctly on film, i just couldn’t achieve the outcome i desired through that medium. The digital shot on the other hand came out exactly how i wanted it(with a beat of tweaking in Photoshop):

Nosebleed

Unfortunately i don’t have access to the film image at this point in time for comparison, but will try and add it to this entry later on (if that’s possible?)

I found it interesting that next year we can use digital cameras for studio work (although it makes sense to). I wish we had access to medium (or even large) format digital capture devices. I’ve worked with these briefly before and they are definitely more fun to use than a simple DSLR. Too bad they’re also a lot more expensive.
